Trips & visits
As an outdoor education student you will undertake a range of
practical activities during weekly sessions which complement the
overnight induction camp during the first week of College.
Practical sessions include a five day multi-activity trip to
Scotland or Wales, the opportunity to enjoy a winter sports trip to
Italy and to design your own multi day expedition. In previous
years expedition groups have cycled from London to Paris, canoed
down the ‘Great Glen Way’, climbed in Cheddar Gorge and mountain
biked and hiked through the Brecon Beacons.
Work experience
As part of your Level 2 course you will have the opportunity to
work at an outdoor centre for a two week placement. This will
introduce you to the industry and enable you to experience how an
outdoor centre works and some of the roles available for a career
in the industry.
As part of the second year of the Level 3 course you will spend
a full term work placement either in the UK or abroad, developing
your skills and furthering your career prospects. In addition, we
strongly encourage you to undertake relevant work in the summer or
at weekends and we organise a large event each November for
companies to attend and interview you for potential jobs and work
experience.
Expert tutors
Our lecturers and instructors have a wide range of experience as
instructors, coaches, teachers and outdoor practitioners. Our
knowledge, experience and passion for the outdoors gives an extra
dimension to the theory based and practical sessions along with
providing you relevant guidance on potential career options.
Fantastic facilities & parkland
Shuttleworth College has beautiful, spacious surroundings in
which you can develop your outdoor education skills. You will be

which will include kayaking, canoeing, orienteering, climbing,
archery and sailing. Other sport facilities we offer you include a
sports hall, gym, squash and tennis courts and outdoor sports
pitches for football, rugby and cricket.
