Why choose us?

Are you passionate about plants and gardening? If so, you should channel your enthusiasm into gaining qualifications that will lead to a career in the land and environment industry.

Be part of our success

Join us here at Shuttleworth College and benefit from our national reputation and 60 years of experience delivering land and the environment courses. You can have confidence that you are learning from the best. Our tutors are experts in their fields, having had successful careers working for a wide range of organisations such as the National Trust, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) and the National Institute of Agricultural Botany (NIAB) crop research. We work with leading plant nurseries, research organisations and top garden designers.

You will be encouraged to enter competitions and win awards to ensure that you stand out from the crowd when applying for jobs or university. Some recent student successes include David Spooner and Luke Johnston winning silver awards at the East of England Show for their ‘Mediterranean’ and ‘Relaxing Sensory’ gardens. Luke Anstee also won bronze for his creation around the theme of Fire and Ice. In 2010 William Colebrook won gold at the East of England Show for his ‘Star Garden’.

Use fantastic facilities

Your classroom will be the beautiful estate and land that Shuttleworth College is surrounded by. You will have access to 98 hectares of land and almost every kind of habitat including grasslands, wetlands, farmland, heathland and woodland; all perfect environments for you to develop your skills and knowledge. Uniquely situated in a conservation area, the estate has a working farm, a fishery, a plant nursery, and formal parklands with many specimen trees.

Be more employable

Through our industry partnerships you will have chance to gain valuable work experience in addition to working on the College’s own farm estate. Some organisations that past students have been involved with include the Woodland Trust, CASE IH, Frosts garden centres, the Environment Agency, Domoney Designs and Woburn Estates. All of this experience will stand you in good stead when applying for jobs or for further study.

All our courses involve transferrable skills and elements of business that employers are looking for, so you can be reassured that you will develop good team working, communication and customer service skills too.

Enjoy your studies

We expect you to work hard, but you will also have time to make new friends and enjoy the fun side of your course. We regularly organise educational trips to ensure that you broaden your knowledge and experience of the subject area you are studying. Some recent visits include trips to the Eden Project and The Lost Gardens of Heligan and the flower markets in Holland.
