Fisheries

Shuttleworth College Fisheries students

If you love fishing and want to make a career out of it, you will find our reservoirs and lakes, stocked with bream, carp, perch, pike, roach, rudd, tench, catfish and trout, an excellent natural learning resource.

You will benefit from the fantastic number of partnerships and contacts the College has with other businesses and companies in the fisheries industry. We regularly undertake work for Local Authorities, Nash Resorts, Clearwater Leisure, the Environment Agency, and Linear Fisheries and you could be yet another one of our students who goes to work in France, whether it be for revetment and enhancement of fishing complexes or marshalling the World Classic Carp competition, or to Romania where students have worked on sturgeon farms. If you are a National Diploma student, you will undertake industry placements in seven week blocks. Local, national, or even international – the choice is yours, as past students have gone as far afield as mainland Europe and the USA.

There are options to continue to higher education in this sector, but students often go on to work as fisheries managers, aquatic retailers, technical assistants, supervisory water bailiffs or fisheries inspectors in the water industry, or similar positions in commercially run fisheries. There are also leisure sectors, like sport fisheries management and aquatics, which present opportunities for willing and dedicated individuals who have the necessary fish husbandry skills, as well as excellent knowledge of habitat and fish stock management.
