Animal Care

Animal Care courses at Shuttleworth College

Working with animals is unlike any other job – there is such great variety in the roles you can do, from working in animal nursing, to large kennels and catteries to training guide dogs for the blind, to dog handling within the armed forces to taking care of exotic animals in a zoo.

You will need to be really dedicated, as animals will require your specialist care and attention all year round, and you will need to have lots of belief in your practical skills. The Animal Care Centre at Shuttleworth will help you build up your confidence, as you will take part in all kinds of practical activities with a wide range of species, including amphibians, invertebrates, small mammals and reptiles, right up to birds and larger animals. You will also be able to study the behaviour of sugar gliders and giant Gambian pouched rats in the nocturnal room, study arid reptilian species that live and breed in our hot room, and practise your husbandry techniques with the ring-tailed lemurs and the meerkats.

Wherever you see your future, you can be sure that our Animal Care team at Shuttleworth has great links with industry, ensuring that you will have every opportunity to gain the hands-on skills and experience you will need to work in practical roles, conduct scientific research or progress to supervisory or managerial posts.
